orientalist
Studies Asian cultures
An orientalist is a scholar who studies the languages, cultures, and histories of Asia and the Middle East.
The term once carried academic prestige but now often implies a Western tendency to view Eastern cultures as exotic, backward, or monolithic—a critique developed by Edward Said: The painting reflects an orientalist fantasy of the harem.
Someone who collects or creates art in this tradition is also an orientalist.
