organicism

Wholes over parts

Organicism is the view that complex systems—societies, ecosystems, or the universe itself—function like living organisms, with interdependent parts that can only be understood in relation to the whole.

In philosophy and social theory, organicism opposes mechanistic views that reduce wholes to their components.

Her organicism led her to see the city as a living entity with its own metabolism.
