guild socialism

Industrial democracy movement

Guild socialism is a political theory proposing that workers should control industry through democratic guilds rather than through state ownership or private capitalism.

Developed in early 20th-century Britain, it envisioned self-governing associations of workers in each trade managing production, with the state limited to representing consumers.

The movement declined after World War I but influenced later cooperative and syndicalist thought.
