opting out
Refusing to participate
Opting out is choosing not to participate in something you would otherwise be included in by default.
The phrase implies withdrawal from an existing arrangement rather than simply declining: You can opt out of marketing emails.
It contrasts with opting in, where participation requires active choice.
Common in contexts of privacy settings, mailing lists, and institutional programs.
