opioid receptor
Morphine binding site
A protein on the surface of nerve cells that binds opioids—both natural ones the body produces (endorphins) and external substances like morphine or heroin.
When activated, opioid receptors reduce pain signals and can produce euphoria.
They're concentrated in brain regions controlling pain, reward, and breathing, which explains both the therapeutic effects and dangers of opioid drugs.
