one-uppers

Always topping others

One-uppers are people who habitually respond to others' stories or achievements by claiming something bigger, better, or more impressive of their own.

The term is mildly derogatory, implying competitive insecurity rather than genuine conversation: Tell a one-upper you ran a 5K and they'll mention their marathon.

The singular one-upper describes the person; one-upping is the behavior.
