nurse log

Fallen tree seedbed

A nurse log is a fallen tree trunk that provides nutrients, moisture, and shelter for seedlings and other plants growing on or beside it.

As the log decays, it becomes a fertile substrate for new growth, particularly in forests where dense canopy limits light reaching the ground.

A row of cedars sprouted along the nurse log.

The term extends metaphorically to anything that nurtures new development through its own decay or sacrifice.
