nom-de-plume

Adopted authorial identity

A nom-de-plume is a pen name—a pseudonym adopted by a writer.

The term is borrowed from French, though actual French speakers say *nom de plume* without hyphens or use *nom de guerre* for any professional pseudonym.

George Orwell was the nom-de-plume of Eric Arthur Blair.

The English phrase *pen name* means exactly the same thing and is more common.
