network hubs
Data traffic directors
Network hubs are central connection points in a computer network where multiple devices link together.
In early networking, a hub was a simple device that received data and broadcast it to all connected computers—inefficient compared to modern switches, which direct traffic only where needed.
The term now often refers more broadly to any central networking equipment or location where connections converge: The server room serves as the network hub for the entire building.
