near post
Striker's near target
In football (soccer) and similar goal-based sports, the near post is the goalpost closest to where the ball is being played from, whether that's a corner kick, cross, or shot.
A striker attacking the near post tries to get in front of defenders to redirect the ball before it reaches the goalkeeper.
He flicked it in at the near post.
The opposite is the far post, which is the goalpost farther from the ball's origin.
