native guides
Local terrain experts
Native guides are local people hired to lead travelers through unfamiliar territory, drawing on intimate knowledge of the land, wildlife, and customs.
The term evokes colonial-era exploration, when European expeditions relied on indigenous expertise: The native guides led us safely through the jungle.
Today the phrase sounds dated; most prefer simply "local guides."
