mummifying

Wrapping the deceased

Mummifying is preserving a body by drying it out and treating it to prevent decay.

The ancient Egyptians mummified their dead as preparation for the afterlife, wrapping them in linen after removing organs and applying resins.

The word extends to any extreme desiccation: The desert heat had mummified the carcass.

Figuratively, something mummified is preserved but lifeless—frozen in an earlier state.
