morning stars

Medieval ball maces

Morning stars are spiked medieval weapons—a ball studded with spikes, attached to a handle, sometimes by a chain.

The name evokes the radiating points of light from a bright star.

A morning star is also the planet Venus when visible in the eastern sky before dawn: We watched the morning star fade as the sun rose.
