moribund

At death's door

Moribund means dying or approaching death: The patient was moribund when they reached the hospital.

More often the word describes institutions, practices, or ideas in terminal decline—not quite dead but clearly on the way: a moribund industry, moribund traditions.

The suggestion is that revival is unlikely or impossible.
