mock up

Rough preliminary version

To mock up is to create a rough or preliminary version of something—a design, product, or layout—for testing or demonstration purposes.

A mock-up shows what the finished thing will look like without full functionality: We mocked up the website before coding it.

The noun mockup (often one word) is the model itself: The architect presented a cardboard mockup of the building.
