mock-ups

Early design versions

Mock-ups are preliminary models or representations of something, built to demonstrate appearance, scale, or basic function before the real thing is produced.

Designers create mock-ups of websites, architects build mock-ups of buildings, and engineers assemble mock-ups of products.

The term emphasizes that these are for visualization and testing, not final use: We reviewed the mock-ups before committing to production.
