X-planes

Experimental research aircraft

X-planes are experimental aircraft developed to test advanced technologies and push the boundaries of flight.

The designation began with the Bell X-1, which broke the sound barrier in 1947.

The X-plane program has produced dozens of aircraft testing everything from hypersonic speeds to vertical takeoff: The X-15 reached the edge of space.

The term sometimes extends to any experimental or prototype aircraft.
