misparse
Read grammar wrong
To misparse is to incorrectly analyze the grammatical structure of a sentence or phrase, resulting in a different meaning than intended.
This happens when word boundaries or relationships are misread: I misread "therapist" as "the rapist".
The term comes from computing and linguistics, where parsing means breaking down text into components, but applies broadly to any misreading of structure: The headline "Kids Make Nutritious Snacks" can be misparsed in an unfortunate way.
