miscalibration

Instrument setting error

Miscalibration is the state of being improperly calibrated—that is, set to an incorrect standard or adjusted inaccurately.

The term applies to instruments and equipment that give faulty readings, but it extends to human judgment as well: someone who consistently overestimates their abilities or underestimates risks suffers from miscalibration.

The miscalibration of the sensor caused the readings to be off by several degrees.

In psychology and decision science, miscalibration specifically describes the gap between confidence and accuracy.
