Conical rifle ammunition
A miniball (also minié ball) is a conical rifle bullet with a hollow base, used widely in the American Civil War.
The base expanded when fired, gripping the barrel's rifling for greater accuracy than round musket balls.
The miniball caused devastating wounds and contributed to the war's massive casualties: Surgeons extracted miniballs by the thousands.
