mimeo

Old office copier

Mimeo is an informal shortening of mimeograph, a duplicating machine that was standard office equipment before photocopiers.

The device forced ink through a stencil onto paper, producing copies with a distinctive purplish tint and chemical smell.

As a verb, to mimeo something is to reproduce it this way: We mimeoed the newsletter and distributed it after class.

The term evokes mid-twentieth-century offices and schools, now largely obsolete.
