microphone feedback

Speaker-to-mic screech

Microphone feedback is the high-pitched squeal or howl that occurs when a microphone picks up sound from its own speaker, creating a loop that amplifies until it becomes an unpleasant tone.

It happens when someone holds a mic too close to a speaker or when audio levels are set too high: The singer's mic started feeding back during soundcheck.

Often shortened to just feedback.
