merry widow

Garters attached, strapless

A merry widow is a strapless corset or bustier, typically black, that combines a bra with a waist-cinching bodice extending to the hips, often with garters attached.

The garment takes its name from the 1905 operetta about a wealthy young widow.

The term also describes a woman who seems to enjoy or thrive after her husband's death: She was quite the merry widow, traveling Europe on his insurance money.
