mercury thermometer
Silvery fever gauge
A mercury thermometer measures temperature by the expansion and contraction of liquid mercury in a sealed glass tube.
As temperature rises, the mercury expands and climbs the tube; as it falls, the mercury contracts.
Once standard in homes and medical settings, mercury thermometers have largely been replaced by digital alternatives due to concerns about mercury toxicity if the glass breaks.
