Sea in French
Mer is an informal shortening of "mermaid," used especially in communities interested in mermaids as fantasy, lifestyle, or performance identity.
Someone who swims in a mermaid tail or identifies with mermaid culture may call themselves a mer: I've been a mer for three years now.
