mental incapacity
Unsound of mind
Mental incapacity is a legal and medical term describing a state in which a person lacks the cognitive ability to make informed decisions, understand consequences, or manage their own affairs.
It may be temporary, as from intoxication or acute illness, or permanent, as from dementia or severe developmental disability.
Courts determine mental incapacity when someone's decision-making must be transferred to a guardian or when assessing whether a person could validly consent to contracts, wills, or medical treatment.
