competency hearings
Mental capacity trials
Competency hearings are legal proceedings to determine whether someone can participate meaningfully in court—typically whether a criminal defendant understands the charges and can assist in their own defense.
A judge may order one when mental illness, cognitive impairment, or other conditions raise doubts: The court scheduled competency hearings after the defendant's erratic behavior.
If found incompetent, proceedings pause until competency is restored or charges are dismissed.
