membrane disruption
Cell wall breach
Membrane disruption is the breaking apart or destabilizing of biological membranes—the lipid barriers surrounding cells and organelles.
Antimicrobial agents, toxins, and certain peptides work by puncturing or dissolving these membranes, causing cell contents to leak out and killing the cell.
The term appears in microbiology, pharmacology, and research on cell death mechanisms: The antibiotic kills bacteria through membrane disruption.
