megadeath
Mass fatality unit
A megadeath is one million human deaths, a unit used in nuclear war planning and civil defense calculations to quantify projected casualties from atomic weapons.
The term emerged during Cold War strategizing, when military planners needed clinical language for discussing mass destruction: The scenario projected twelve megadeaths in the first strike.
