meerschaums
Carved smoking pipes
Meerschaums are tobacco pipes made from meerschaum, a soft white mineral that carves easily and develops a rich patina with use.
The material's name comes from German for "sea foam," from its lightness and color.
Meerschaum pipes are often elaborately carved with faces, figures, or decorative patterns: His collection included several antique meerschaums.
