medieval trade routes
Old merchant highways
Medieval trade routes were the network of paths, roads, and sea lanes that connected Europe, Asia, and Africa during the Middle Ages, roughly from the 5th to 15th centuries.
The most famous was the Silk Road, linking China to the Mediterranean, while maritime routes connected East African ports to India and beyond.
These routes facilitated not just commerce in goods like spices, silk, and precious metals, but also the exchange of ideas, technologies, religions, and unfortunately diseases.
The Black Death spread along medieval trade routes from Asia to Europe.
