mechanical mouse
Ball-tracking input device
A mechanical mouse is a computer pointing device that tracks movement using a rolling ball on its underside.
As the ball rotates against the desk surface, internal rollers detect direction and speed.
Mechanical mice dominated personal computing from the 1980s until optical mice replaced them in the early 2000s.
They required regular cleaning as the ball collected dust and debris.
