mara

South American cavy

A mara is a long-legged rodent native to South America, resembling a cross between a rabbit and a small deer.

Also called the Patagonian hare or cavy, maras live in open grasslands and can run at high speeds to escape predators.

In Buddhist and Hindu traditions, Mara is also the demon who tempted the Buddha, representing distraction and spiritual death. (Capitalized Mara is a given name.)
