magnetos

Engine spark sources

Magnetos is the plural of magneto, a small electrical generator that produces current through spinning magnets.

Before electric starters became standard, magnetos provided the spark for internal combustion engines—turning the crank spun the magneto, which fired the spark plugs.

They remain common in small engines, aircraft, and vintage vehicles: The old tractor's magneto needed replacing.
