pilloried

Mocked before crowds

Pilloried is the past tense of pillory.

A pillory was a wooden framework with holes for the head and hands, used to publicly humiliate offenders—crowds might jeer or throw things at the immobilized person.

The literal punishment is obsolete, but the figurative sense thrives: to be pilloried is to be publicly ridiculed or denounced.

The politician was pilloried in the press for his remarks.
