low tides

Ocean at minimum

Low tides are the periodic retreats of ocean water from shore, when sea level reaches its lowest point in the tidal cycle.

Tides rise and fall roughly twice daily as the moon's gravity pulls water across the Earth.

At low tide, beaches widen, tide pools appear, and rocks normally submerged become exposed: We went clamming at low tide.

Figuratively, a low tide suggests a period of diminished resources or energy.
