lipreading

Decoding mouth movements

Lipreading is understanding speech by watching the movements of a speaker's lips, tongue, and face rather than hearing the sounds.

People who are deaf or hard of hearing often develop this skill: She's gotten good at lipreading, but it's exhausting in group conversations.

Also spelled as two words: lip reading.
