speechreading

Watching mouths talk

Speechreading is understanding speech by watching a speaker's lip movements, facial expressions, and gestures rather than relying on hearing.

The term is preferred over "lipreading" in deaf and hard-of-hearing communities because it acknowledges that comprehension involves more than just the lips: She learned speechreading after losing her hearing.
