lines of scrimmage

Opposing team markers

In American football, the lines of scrimmage are the two imaginary lines running across the field at the spot where the ball is placed before each play.

One line marks the offense's side, the other the defense's—the neutral zone between them is where play begins.

Figuratively, a line of scrimmage is any starting point for confrontation: Both sides have drawn their lines of scrimmage on the budget debate.
