line drives

Flat, fast hits

Line drives are batted balls in baseball that travel in a relatively straight, low trajectory—neither the high arc of a fly ball nor the ground-hugging bounce of a grounder.

A well-struck line drive typically indicates solid contact: He hit a line drive up the middle for a base hit.

Line drives that find gaps between fielders often result in extra-base hits.
