foul tips
Barely nicked pitches
A foul tip is a pitched ball that grazes the bat and goes directly into the catcher's mitt.
Unlike other foul balls, a foul tip counts as a strike even on a two-strike count—meaning a batter can strike out on one.
The ball must go sharply and directly to the catcher's glove to qualify; if it pops up first, it's an ordinary foul ball.
