lime scale
Hard water residue
Lime scale is the chalky white or grayish mineral deposit that builds up on surfaces in contact with hard water—inside kettles, around faucets, on showerheads.
It forms when calcium and magnesium compounds in the water precipitate out, especially when heated.
Also spelled as one word: limescale.
The lime scale in the kettle was so thick it took hours to dissolve.
