life-saver

One who rescues

A life-saver is someone or something that rescues from danger or disaster.

Literally, it's a person who saves drowning swimmers—a lifeguard.

More commonly, it describes anything that provides crucial help in a difficult moment: That extra battery was a life-saver.

In American English, Life Savers is also a brand of ring-shaped hard candy.
