lidars
Light-based distance sensors
Lidars is the plural of lidar, a remote sensing technology that measures distances by illuminating targets with laser light and analyzing the reflected pulses.
Lidar systems map terrain, guide autonomous vehicles, and detect atmospheric particles.
The word blends "light" and "radar": The self-driving car uses multiple lidars to perceive its surroundings.
