leghold trap

Jaw-style wildlife snare

A leghold trap is a mechanical device that captures animals by clamping onto their leg when triggered.

Used by trappers for fur-bearing animals and sometimes for pest control, it consists of spring-loaded jaws that snap shut when an animal steps on a pressure plate.

Animal welfare groups have campaigned against leghold traps as cruel, and many jurisdictions have banned or restricted their use.

The fox gnawed at its leg, desperate to escape the leghold trap.
