leghold
Animal capture device
A leghold is a type of animal trap that clamps onto the leg when triggered, restraining the animal until the trapper returns.
Leghold traps are controversial—widely used in fur trapping but condemned by animal welfare advocates as cruel: Several states have banned leghold traps.
The term often appears as a modifier: leghold trap.
