left coast
Western progressive region
Left coast is a playful term for the West Coast of the United States, especially California.
The spelling puns on the region's reputation for liberal politics: Left Coast elites don't understand Middle America.
The term can be affectionate or dismissive depending on the speaker's own political leanings.
