lead rein
Horse control line
A lead rein is a strap or rope attached to a horse's bridle, held by someone on foot to guide the animal.
In children's riding lessons, a lead rein allows an adult to control the horse while the child learns: The pony was kept on a lead rein until she felt confident.
Figuratively, to be on a lead rein is to be under close supervision or control.
