lead characters
Story's central figures
Lead characters are the central figures in a story—the people (or creatures) whose experiences drive the narrative.
In a novel, film, or television series, lead characters receive the most screen time or page space, and the plot typically revolves around their conflicts and development: The lead characters finally meet in episode three.
Also called main characters or protagonists, though a lead character need not be heroic.
