tragic heroes
Flawed noble characters
Tragic heroes are protagonists whose downfall comes through some combination of fate and personal flaw.
The concept originates with Aristotle's analysis of Greek drama: a noble figure brought low by hubris or misjudgment, evoking pity and fear in the audience.
Hamlet, Macbeth, and Oedipus are classic examples.
The term extends loosely to real figures whose gifts contribute to their undoing: He was a tragic hero—brilliant enough to rise fast, arrogant enough to fall hard.
